EN - The way the world is.

When you awake, when you understand, when you see, the world becomes right. We're always bothered, aren't we, by the problem of evil. That extraordinary powerful story of the little kid who's walking in a jungle village in Africa along the banks of a river and sees a crocodile who's been trapped in a net. And the crocodile says, "Would you have pity on me and release me? I may look ugly, but it isn't my fault, you know. I was made this way. And whatever my external appearance, I have got a mother's heart. I came out this morning in search of food for my young ones and I got into this trap!" And the boy says, "Ah ah, if I helped you out of that trap, you'd kill me, you'd grab me." And the crocodile says, "Do you think I'd do that to my benefactor and liberator?" So the boy was persuaded and he took the net off and the crocodile grabbed. There he was caught between the jaws of the crocodile, and he says, "So this is what I get for my good action." And the crocodile says, "Well, don't take it personally, son, this is the way the world is, this is the law of life." And the boy says: "This is not the way the world is, this is not the law of life." And the crocodile says, "Do you want to ask someone?" There is a bird sitting on a branch and he says, "Bird, is what the crocodile says. What have you to say?" The bird says, "The crocodile is right. Look at me. I was coming home one day with food for my fledglings. And imagine my horror as I was coming back to my nest to see a snake crawling up that tree, making straight for my nest. And I was totally helpless while it kept devouring my young ones, one after the other. I kept screaming and shouting, but it was useless. The crocodile is right, this is the law of life, this is the way the world is." "See," says the crocodile, "come let's go". The boy says, "Well, let me ask someone else." And the crocodile says, "All right, go ahead." And there was an old donkey passing by the bank of that river. And he says "Donkey, this is what the crocodile says. Is the crocodile right?" And the donkey says, "The crocodile is quite right. Look at me. I've worked and slaved for my master all my life and he barely gave me enough to eat. And now that I'm old and useless, he has turned me loose, and here I am wandering in the jungle, waiting for some wild beast to pounce on me and put an end to my life. The crocodile is right, this is the law of life, this is the way the world is." "See," says the crocodile "let's go!"
The boy says, "Give me one chance, one last chance. Let me ask one other being. Look how good I was to you?" So the crocodile says, "All right, your last chance." And the boy sees a rabbit passing by, and he says, "Rabbit, is the crocodile right?" The rabbit sits on his haunches and says to the crocodile, "Did you say that to that kid?" And the crocodile says, "Yes, I did." He said "Wait a minute, now. We've got to discuss that." The crocodile said "Go right ahead." And the rabbit says, "How can we discuss it if you've got that boy in your mouth? Release him; he's got to take part in the discussion, too." The crocodile says, "You're a clever one, you are. The moment I release him, he'll run away." And the rabbit said, "I thought you had more sense than that. If he attempted to run away, one slash of your tail would kill him." "Fair enough," said the crocodile, so he released the boy. And the moment the boy was released, the rabbit said, "Run!" And he ran and escaped. Then said the rabbit to the boy, "Don't you enjoy crocodile flesh? Don't the people in your village, wouldn't they like to have a good meal? You know something? You didn't really release that crocodile; most of his body is still caught in the net. Why don't you go to the village and bring everybody and have a banquet."
So that's exactly what the boy did. He went to the village called all the men folk. They come with their axes and staves and spears to kill the crocodile. And the boy's dog came with him and when the dog saw the rabbit, he gave chase, caught hold of the rabbit, and throttled it. And the boy comes hunting on the scene too late, and as he watches the rabbit die, he says, "The crocodile was right, this is the way the world is, this is the law of life." And there is no explanation you could give that would explain away all the sufferings and the evil and the torture and the destruction and the hunger in the world. You'll never explain it. You're trying gamely with your formulas, religious and otherwise, but you'll never explain it. Because life is a mystery, which means your thinking mind cannot make sense out of it. For that you've got to wake up and you'll suddenly realize that reality is not problematic, you are the problem.

IT - Così va il mondo.
Quando sei sveglio, quando capisci, quando vedi, il mondo diventa giusto. Noi siamo sempre disturbati dal problema del male, vero? C'è una storia significativa e straordinaria di un ragazzino che passeggia in un villaggio nella giungla in Africa lungo le rive di un fiume e vede un coccodrillo che è stato intrappolato in una rete. E il coccodrillo dice: "Vuoi avere pietà di me e lasciarmi libero? Posso sembrare brutto, ma non è colpa mia, sai. Sono stato creato così. E qualunque sia il mio aspetto esteriore, ho il cuore di una madre. Sono uscito questa mattina in cerca di cibo per i miei piccoli e sono caduto in questa trappola!" E il ragazzo dice: "Ah ah, se ti aiutassi ad uscire da quella trappola, tu mi uccideresti, mi prenderesti". E il coccodrillo dice: "Credi che potrei fare questo al mio benefattore e liberatore?" Così il ragazzo si convinse e come tolse la rete, il coccodrillo lo afferrò. Catturato, e tra le fauci del coccodrillo, disse: "Quindi questo è il risultato della mia buona azione." E il coccodrillo dice:" Beh, non considerarlo un fatto personale, figlio, così è come va il mondo, questa è la legge della vita." E il ragazzo dice: "Questo non è come gira il mondo, questa non è la legge della vita." E il coccodrillo dice: "Vuoi chiedere a qualcuno?" C'è un uccello seduto su un ramo e lui gli dice, "Uccello, questo è quello che sostiene il coccodrillo. Tu cos'hai da dire?" L'uccello dice: "Il coccodrillo ha ragione. Guarda me. Stavo tornando a casa un giorno con il cibo per i miei piccoli. E immagina il mio orrore quando, mentre stavo tornando al mio nido, ho visto un serpente che strisciava su quell'albero, andando dritto verso il mio nido. E io ero totalmente indifeso, mentre lui divorava i miei piccoli, uno dopo l'altro. Ho continuato a urlare e gridare, ma è stato inutile. Il coccodrillo ha ragione, questa è la legge della vita, così è come va il mondo." "Visto?, dice il coccodrillo, forza, andiamo." Il ragazzo dice: "Beh, lasciami chiedere a
qualcun altro." E il coccodrillo dice: "Va bene, vai avanti." E c'era un vecchio asino che passava per la riva di quel fiume. E lui gli dice: "Asino, questo è ciò che dice il coccodrillo. Ha ragione il coccodrillo?" E l'asino dice: "Il coccodrillo ha perfettamente ragione. Guarda me. Ho lavorato come uno schiavo per il mio padrone tutta la vita e lui mi dava a malapena da mangiare. E ora che sono vecchio e inutile, mi ha lasciato libero, ed eccomi qui che vago nella giungla, in attesa di qualche bestia feroce che balzi su di me e ponga fine alla la mia vita. Il coccodrillo ha ragione, questa è la legge della vita, così è come va il mondo." "Visto?, dice il coccodrillo, andiamo!" Il ragazzo dice: "Dammi una possibilità, un'ultima possibilità. Lasciami chiedere ad un altro essere. Hai visto come sono stato bravo con te!" Così il coccodrillo dice: "Va bene, è la tua ultima chance." E il ragazzo vede passare un coniglio, e gli dice, "Coniglio, il coccodrillo ha ragione?" Il coniglio si siede sulla sua groppa e dice al coccodrillo: "Hai detto questo
a quel ragazzo?" E il coccodrillo dice: "Sì, l'ho fatto." Disse: "Aspetta un attimo, adesso. Dobbiamo discuterne." Il coccodrillo dice, "Vai pure avanti." E il coniglio dice: "Come possiamo discutere se hai il ragazzo in bocca? Lascialo; se anche lui deve prendere parte alla discussione." Il coccodrillo. dice: "Tu sei un furbo, sei. Nel momento in cui lo lascio, lui scapperà via." E il coniglio disse: "Pensavo che tu avessi più buon senso. Se lui provasse a scappare, un tuo colpo di tua coda lo ucciderebbe." "Va bene", disse il coccodrillo, così liberò il ragazzo. E ne momento in cui il ragazzo fu rilasciato, il coniglio disse: "Corri!" E lui corse e fuggì. Poi il coniglio disse al ragazzo: "Non ti piace la carne di coccodrillo? Le persone del tuo villaggio non vorrebbero avere un buon pasto? La sai una cosa? Tu non hai liberato quel coccodrillo; la maggior parte del suo corpo è ancora intrappolata nella rete. Perché non vai in paese e non porti qui tutti per un banchetto?" Ed è esattamente ciò che fece il ragazzo. Andò al villaggio e chiamò tutti gli uomini che arrivarono con le loro asce, bastoni e lance per uccidere il coccodrillo. E il cane del ragazzo venne con lui e quando il cane vide il coniglio, gli diede la caccia, lo prese e lo strozzò. E il ragazzo arrivò sulla scena della caccia troppo tardi, e mentre guardava il coniglio morire, disse, "Il coccodrillo aveva ragione, così è come va il mondo, questa è la legge della vita." E non c'è nessuna spiegazione che possa giustificare tutte le sofferenze e il male e la tortura e la distruzione e la fame nel mondo. Non si potrà mai spiegare. Si sta provando con le formule, con la religione e quant'altro, ma non si potrà mai spiegare. Perché la vita è un mistero, che significa che la mente pensante non può comprenderlo. Per questo vi dovete svegliare e capire improvvisamente che la realtà non è problematica, siete voi il problema.
